The Women’s Funding Network began more than 30 years ago with the belief that by democratizing philanthropy through local funds created by, and for, women, we could dismantle gender inequity region-by-region across the globe. Thirty years later we see that vision in action through the steadfast efforts of our members during this unprecedented crisis.

As women’s foundations, gender equity funders, and philanthropists, our members have played a critical role in giving a voice, decision-making power, and resources to women and their families. Women’s funds and foundations’ efforts have ensured that a gender lens remains a central focus and priority in our communities amidst this uncertain moment in history. Without their support, women disappear from the conversation, and from the economic equation entirely when it comes to equitable and appropriate allocation of funds and resources.

Announced in June 2019 with a historic contribution of $300 million CAD from Global Affairs Canada, the Equality Fund is an innovative model delivering unprecedented resources to feminist movements. Dominika Kulczyk commits millions for COVID-19 response in Poland

Dominika Kulczyk, a Polish philanthropist, journalist and entrepreneur, has today announced an approximately $5 million commitment (PLN 20 million) in support of Polish doctors and health workers working in response to the global coronavirus public health emergency.

Funding will be made available through the Doctors for Doctors Foundation (Fundacja Lekarze Lekarzom), created by the official trade body – the Chief Medical Council – representing doctors in Poland.

This vital financial support will promote further testing, and build capabilities and capacity to identify and mitigate the spread of the disease in the country, ultimately helping the global health community to minimise the effects of the pandemic.

Rihanna’s Foundation Donates $5 Million to Fight COVID-19

We All Need Mail-in COVID Testing: Sign the Petition

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is working on a mail-in test for COVID-19 that could be available in the next two weeks. When I learned this from a news summary here, my first thought was: why would this mail-in test be restricted by zip code? Why provide this, the safest way to test (without having to go into a health care environment and risk infection) to only a select few? Why not provide it to everyone?

According to this article in the Washington Post, these mail-in kits will be scaled up by the Gates Foundation if they are clinically valid.

WFN Announces Leadership Transition as CEO Steps Down

San Francisco, Calif. ― After six years at the helm of one of the oldest women’s philanthropy organizations in the world, Cynthia Nimmo will be stepping down from her role as President and CEO of the Women’s Funding Network (WFN), effective Feb. 17, Julie Castro Abrams, Governance Chair of the organization’s Board of Directors announced today.
