New Product: PW Funder Database for Gender Equality

It’s always a challenge finding funders, that special group of folks who understand your mission and want to align with that mission by providing financial support.

pw knowledgebase
Philanthropy Women has released a new funder contact base, a database of over 400 listings of gender equality funders across the categories of U.S., International, Family, and Corporate giving.

That’s one of the reasons we’ve created the world’s first database of gender equality funders, the Philanthropy Women Funder Database. With over 400 listings of funders for gender equality, the PW Funder Database wants to be the source that helps more people break into gender equality work.

The PW Funder Database entries are short, addressing only the barest of facts you need to know as you scour for leads. Each entry contains information on the type of funding provided for women and girls by the funder, as well as link access to lists of grants awarded by the funder, proposal writing guidelines, FAQ’s, application pages, and other relevant data on contacting and querying. Each entry also provides a window into real-time happenings for this funder or organization via Twitter (when available), so you can check out the current culture of the organization and see if it feels like a good fit for a funding pitch.

A few disclaimers seem in order. This database is by no means complete. The ground is literally shifting beneath our feet for women’s growing power in funding gender equality work. New foundations and funders are arriving on the scene daily, and organizations and giving networks run primarily by women are growing all over the world. We will work to continuously update this database during the first year to make the list as comprehensive as possible, but our ability to do this will depend partially on subscriber support. We are also planning to add a fifth category for collaborative giving (giving circles and giving networks).

Disclaimer #2 of the PW Funder Database: This database does not include state and regional public women’s funds and foundations. There is already a fairly comprehensive database of these funders available at the Women’s Funding Network. It also doesn’t include local community foundation funding for women and girls, which is also often substantial. If you are looking for funding, don’t forget to check out the community foundations and women’s funds in your area.

It was a daunting task to take on researching and organizing all of these funders, but it was also joyful work. It reinforced my conviction that women funders are doing some of the most powerful social change strategizing, and that these funders are bringing along a growing cadre of corporate, family, and private foundation support.

I hope the PW Funder Database proves both inspiring and useful to our subscribers. We will enjoy watching the numbers of funders in the PW Funder Database grow over the years, taking on new and more potent dimensions.

  1. Thank you so much for providing this list of funders! Our nonprofit, Pastoralist Child Foundation works at the grassroots level to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage in Samburu and Maasai Mara, Kenya by providing workshops for youth, adults and elders. We strive to educate all stakeholders in an effort to increase gender equality for the marginalized girls and women. The importance of education is supported by our student scholarship program which assists girls to attend secondary boarding schools and universities. In addition, our women’s economic empowerment program is progressing very well!!

Funding is very competitive. We will take a good look at the list you provided, and will hopefully be successful in acquiring needed money.

    Sincerely,
