William and Flora Hewlett Foundation

Overview: The Hewlett Foundation does some of the most substantial funding for reproductive rights globally ($24 million annually) and also for women's economic empowerment globally ($6 million annually). It also does a substantial amount of grantmaking for reproductive rights in the U.S. (12 million annually) and is one of the few funders that provides unrestricted support for organizations. In 2017, they awarded a total of $66 million for women's causes. Hewlett grants tend to be large, such as the 2018 award to Femnet of $850,000 to "support of a gender lens to macroeconomic policy at the local and regional level in Africa." Hewlett gave Boston University $100,000 for "research on women's empowerment" in October of 2018. Smaller grants in 2018 included $25,000 for UltraViolet and $50,000 for the International Women's Health Coalition. Funding Area: Reproductive rights and women's empowerment.
