New York, NY – Grantmakers For Girls of Color announced has awarded $2.8 million to more than 100 organizations in 28 states and D.C. as part of its Love is Healing COVID-19 response fund. Launched in May 2020, the fund represents the organization’s first grantmaking milestone and aims to address the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, particularly Black/African American, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian girls and gender expansive youth of color.

“We launched this fund in the aftermath of COVID 19 to support coalitions and organizations around the country that have been fighting the marginalization of girls of color well before COVID-19 — and are responding to the impact of the pandemic with urgency, creativity and care,” said Dr. Monique W. Morris, executive director of Grantmakers for Girls of Color. “We are inspired by the work our grantee partners continue to do every day to respond to the needs of  Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and Pacific  girls as well as other girls and gender-expansive youth of color, who are being hard hit by this pandemic. Philanthropy, too, must redouble our efforts to support groups that are providing much needed relief and healing.”

The more than 100 organizations provide assistance for a range of needs, including preventative or responsive health strategies, educational and economic support, interventions to support systems impacted youth and survivors, and research and mapping to fully understand the conditions girls of color are experiencing in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grantmakers For Girls of Color works to amplify and resource the transformative organizing work to dismantle systems of oppression in the United States led by girls and femme(s) and gender expansive youth of color. One month after bringing on its first executive director, Dr. Morris, the organization launched the Love is Healing COVID 19  rapid response fund as its first grantmaking program. Given the reality that the impacts of this pandemic will last beyond 2020, G4GC will continue to award resources via this fund to organizations in 2021.
