With the world in a state of crisis and flux, the people at Giving Tuesday, which happens the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, have created another day of global unity, #GivingTuesdayNow, which will take place this Tuesday, May 5, in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
As editor and publisher of Philanthropy Women, I will be participating in GivingTuesdayNow by supporting organizations that are particularly dedicated to women. We know from reports that women are crying out for help during this time, due to increased rates of domestic violence, increased problems with employment and income, and many other needs. In consultation with my family, these are the organizations we have chosen to support.
For readers, I hope our giving might provide inspiration or even guidance for your giving on #GivingTuesdayNow.
1. Giving to our Local Women’s Fund, Women’s Fund of Rhode Island
Our first donation goes to our local women’s fund, the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island. Because we know that women’s funds take an approach that prioritizes the most marginalized and works to lift up women in the economy and as leaders, this feels like the right fit for our first gift to help women during COVID.
2. Giving to our Local Domestic Violence Shelter, Sojourner House
Rates of domestic violence are off the charts, and I can tell you from my own practice as a therapist right now, women are reporting more abuse, mistreatment, domination, and manipulation, than ever before. Therefore, our second gift of #GivingTuesdayNow goes to Sojourner House, our local Domestic Violence shelter in Rhode Island.
3. Giving to Help Girls Globally During COVID
Our third gift this year is going to PLAN International, to support its mission to reach, protect, and uplift girls globally. This pandemic is going to set back women and girls across the world, and Tessie San Martin, CEO of PLAN, is reporting an increase in girls not attending school, being married off as child brides, and being otherwise further oppressed as the pandemic starts to impact developing countries. Our third gift goes to support those girls.
We’d also like to offer the comments area below as a place where readers can share about where they did their giving to help women and girls for #GivingTuesdayNow, or, if you work for an organization that is doing work and looking for funding, you can also post a comment and request support today.

Women’s Global Education Project is raising $5,000 to support our grassroots COVID-19 relief efforts in rural Kenya and Senegal!
We’re delivering food and cleaning supplies to our communities, and are distributing radios and lanterns to girls in our scholarship program to ensure that they can continue their studies amid school closures.
Every donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar (up to $300), so we invite the Philanthropy Women community to give at the following link to double your impact: https://www.caringcrowd.org/support-girls-rural-kenya-senegal-through-covid-19
I work for Ipas, an international nonprofit dedicated to ensuring all women and girls have access to essential reproductive health services, including safe abortion. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are seeing increased barriers to abortion care, and Ipas is working to guarantee that women still have the power to make their own reproductive health choices during this extremely challenging time. Our COVID-19 Rapid Response Funding effort supports innovative, fast-moving work that our teams are rolling out we learn more about the pandemic’s impact on abortion care and how we can help. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
