New Editor in Chief Announced for Nonprofit Quarterly

Nonprofit Quarterly has named Cynthia Suarez as the new co-president and editor in chief, assuming the new role on January 1st, 2021.

The Nonprofit Quarterly’s board of directors is very pleased to announce it has selected its new editor in chief and co-president in Cynthia (“Cyndi”) Suarez, who assumed the role as of January 1^st, joining co-president and publisher Joel Toner. Suarez was selected after a national search and comes with four years of strong, tested leadership in a senior editor role at NPQ.

Suarez’s work focuses on how social change occurs. She has decades of experience working in, and consulting to, nonprofit organizations, social movements, and philanthropy. She has a passion for liberatory practices and specializes in network and platform strategies. She is the author of the celebrated book The Power Manual: How to Master Complex Power Dynamics(2018), as well as numerous articles at NPQ looking at the state of racial and social justice in the sector and beyond. Before coming to NPQ, Suarez was, among other things, executive director at Northeast Action, the first regional political strategy center in the United States. Past consulting clients include the Movement for Black Lives and United We Dream.

New Microgrants Will Support Trans and Non-Binary People

Human Rights Campaign also announces support of Destination Tomorrow’s work to provide support directly to transgender and non-binary people in urgent need

Today, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF), the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, announced the launch of a new small grants program as a part of the organization’s Transgender Justice Initiative (TJI). The program will award $30,000 nationally in the form of 30 $1,000 grants to community members advancing transgender justice initiatives rooted in partnership with outside organizations. Four grants per city will be available in Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, Kansas City, New Orleans and Philadelphia. An additional six grants will be available nationally. New York, NY – Grantmakers For Girls of Color announced has awarded $2.8 million to more than 100 organizations in 28 states and D.C. as part of its Love is Healing COVID-19 response fund. Launched in May 2020, the fund represents the organization’s first grantmaking milestone and aims to address the impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, particularly Black/African American, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian girls and gender expansive youth of color.

WMC Doubles Down on Ecofeminism with New Climate Channel

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s annual Arctic Report Card, released on Tuesday, found that the average air temperature from October 2019 through September 2020 was the second-highest recorded in at least 120 years: Temperatures were 3.4 degrees Fahrenheit above the baseline average for 1981-2010. And with the rise in temperatures comes a widening gap in who lives and who dies, and who lives well vs. who is left behind.

Janet Dewart Bell Elected New Chair of Women’s Media Center Board

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The board of the Women’s Media Center has unanimously elected Janet Dewart Bell as its new chair. Founding co-chair and WMC co-chair emerita Pat Mitchell nominated Bell to be the organization’s new chair; WMC co-founder Gloria Steinem seconded the nomination.
